Stanford Tournament Rules Summary This rules summary is provided to the referees as a service. These are not the official rules of the competition. NO warranty is made that this summary is up to date.
Match Card
Obtain from Field Marshal. Only players on the match card will be allowed to play. Tournamet rules indicate that there may be exceptions - but the exceptions are not identified.
Passes
Player and coach passes are required. Acceptable credentials are current and laminated:
- US Club Soccer
- USYSA-CYSA
- AYSO
Player counts
To start / continue a match 11v11 must have 7 players. Roster can have 26. Maximum 20 players dressed to play. 9v9 must have 6 players. Roster can have 26. Maximum 16 players dressed to play. 7v7 must have 5 players. Roster can have 26. Maximum 14 players dressed to play.
Health care professional
Health care professional must be identified to referee BEFORE the match begins
Orthopedic supports
No casts, air splints or metal splints. Elastic braces okay. Other braces per referee.
Concussion protocol
Concussion protocol per USClub. Player removed due to suspected concussion / head injury cannot return until cleared by a health care professional. Health care professional must be identified to referee BEFORE the match begins.
Age modifications 7 v 7
- Build out line enforced
- Yes PKs
- No Keeper punts or drop kicks
- Referee can permit a rethrow if first throw was done incorrectly
- Goal kick from the Goal Area
Age modifications 9 v 9
Deliberate heading
No heading in 7v7 and 9v9 matches
Match Length
U09-U10 : 20 minute halves - 7v7 U11-U12 : 25 minute halves - 9v9 U13-U19 : 30 minute halves - 11v11
Half time EXACTLY 5 minutes End games no later than 5 minutes before the start of the next game. Games must start within 5 minutes of scheduled start time - not enough players equates to a forfeit. Contact the Field Marshal.
IFAB "Only Captains"
Youth leagues are not adopting the IFAB requirements for captain armbands and the "only captains" mechanic. Posted July 22, 2025
Winner Required
Quarter Final, Semi-Final, Consolation Matches that must produce a winner If tied at end of regulation time -- Penalties
Championship Matches If tied at end of regulation time -- two 5 minute overtime periods will be played with golden goal. If tied at the end of the second overtime -- Penalties
For 7v7 and 9v9 the minimum number of Penalties ill be 3 instead of 5. (Best of three.) UNUSUAL.
Other
Home team supplies balls. Home team is listed first and is on left side of match card. Home team changes jersey if there is a color conflict.
Send offs
Referees complete a sendoff report IMMEDIATELY after game - see the field marshal. A player or coach who has been ejected in a single game shall not return for that game and will not be allowed to participate in the next scheduled game.
